The little ones engender such profound yet subtle effects on adults. Sometimes you won’t realize that you’re doing things that you don’t normally do. So awhile ago, i was thinking what the baby nephew would call my cousins by.
I established that the baby nephew would call my eldest female cousin as 大表姑. Then the others would be 二表姑, 三表姑 and so on. Alternatively, they can be called using their names like 阿婷表姑.
Then when i come to the uncles, i kind of got lost. Here’s a tricky question. My 2nd auntie has a son who is one month younger than my 3rd auntie. So which one is the 大表叔?
i guessing 2nd son’s one by rank?
anw i dun think it’s 大表姑. i think it’s 大表姨. cos ur generation alr address everyone as 姨. and u r an on obvious 叔.
Yeah, i’m thinking so too. 2nd aunt’s son is the 大表叔.
Well.. 叔叔 goes with 姑姑 and 舅舅 goes with 姨姨. The aunts and uncles are related to me through my mum, so i call them 舅舅 and 姨姨 and the others will have 姨妈. The aunts and uncles are related to you through your father, so you call them 叔叔, 姑姑 and 姑妈. So similarly, the baby nephew is related to my cousins through his father, which means he is calling you people 表叔 and 表姑.
On the other hand, the junior Giams are related to us through their mother, which makes them call us 表舅 and 表姨.
I was actually thinking how the baby nephew would address senior Giam and Sujit. I’m guessing that would be 大表姑夫 and 二表姑夫. Most certainly not the type of addressing we hear in wuxia stories, lol : D
is 大表姑夫 meh? I tot usually we call 大表姑丈?
Oh is it? 大表姑丈 sounds more correct haha : D
i was thinking it would be the baby’s dad’s dad side who are the 叔叔 and 姑姑. then everyone else are 舅舅 and 姨姨. purely guesswork here.
Really? Then considering..
My mum is related to you via your dad’s mother side. You call her 姑妈. You call 姑妈’s brother 叔叔 right?
har??? ur mum is my dad’s sister. it’s very direct so call 姑妈.
if u trying to differentiate betwee 姑妈 and 姑姑, then it’s easy. dad’s older sis and dad’s younger sis respectively. dad’s older and younger bro would be 伯伯 and 叔叔 respectively.
No, i’m just trying to establish that everyone on the father side is 叔 or 姑, not 舅 or 姨. That is the baby nephew calls you 表姑 which is contrary to what you said in the first comment, that he should call you 表姨.
hmm, i dunno how to address dad’s maternal cousins. or rather i dunno who they are also.
Oh.. then how?
